A New Day of Recovery in Santa Barbara

Our Primary Purpose

New House dedicates itself to providing a clean, sober and healthy environment that allows men with alcohol and other drug problems to begin their journey of recovery and to reclaim their dignity, self-esteem, and sense of purpose.

Program

The experience of New House Santa Barbara is that successful sobriety is achieved through the support of others in the common goal of recovery. New House is therefore staffed entirely by clients. Regular meetings are offered on-site by community 12-Step groups, and 12-Step sponsorship is required. The brotherhood and friendships that develop in New House are lifelong and are a gift of sober living.

While no treatment services are provided, many men participate in outside treatment programs while living at New House. New House encourages full outside employment as soon as possible for those entering the program. The program provides three nutritious meals daily and well-maintained living quarters. Clients share the responsibility of some housekeeping duties.

There are no restrictions on length of stay at New House II or III, but many clients building a solid foundation stay between 6 and 12 months and become able to solve problems in sobriety without having to return to alcohol or drugs as their solution. Men who achieve 6 months of successful sobriety are eligible to apply for admission to the Grad House, which offers increased independence, autonomy and self-sufficiency in preparation for returning to their home or new living space.

New House is open to any male over the age of eighteen who has a desire to remain clean and sober. Due to licensing restrictions, New House is not able to admit men who are not ambulatory or who have severe mental illnesses. Applicants are required to be able to test clean to be eligible for admission and may request a screening interview at either of our main facilities.

While all clients are required to pay client fees, being unable to pay in advance is rarely a barrier to admission. Scholarships may be available but are contingent on the financial position of the organization at the time. Serious individuals needing some help to get started may be granted a scholarship for short periods while they find work or a source of income.

New House program for the next man

“I struggled for years trying to help my son with his addictions. Thank God I found New House. They saved his life and mine. They have become a second family to him and he has made friends for life. Unlike so many sober living houses they really care for the well-being of their people and do not tolerate drugs or alcohol. It is so nice to finally see my son happy.”

Grateful Mom

“New House offered me structure and accountability. I spent decades in my addiction while bad habits formed, then expected change overnight – I finally decided to give myself a chance at New House sober living to build a solid foundation in recovery.”

About Us | History

On March 31, 1949, a small group of Santa Barbara citizens met with Marty Mann, founder of the National Council on Alcoholism, to discuss the problem of alcoholism in the Santa Barbara community. They incorporated in October of that year, calling themselves the Santa Barbara Committee on Alcoholism.

Local facilities for alcoholism were inadequate, and in May of 1955, under the direction of Elmo Little – an electrician from Knoxville, Tennessee – the first New House was opened. The original supporters were pledged to keep New House self-supporting and free from government tangles and restrictions. Elmo had told one of the many men he sponsored, William Donahue, that what many alcoholics need in Santa Barbara was “a new house on a new street in a new city for a newfound recovery.”

New House became independent of the Committee on Alcoholism in 1974, and in 1978 opened New House II. In February of 1991, New House III was purchased at 2434 Bath Street, increasing the New House capacity to 100 men. The original New House facility was retired and replaced by a Grad House on Castillo Street in 2001.

When Bill McCormack became Executive Director in 1987, New House would occasionally admit a resident who was addicted to drugs other than alcohol. But there was no formal policy allowing this. Bill quickly acknowledged the reality that a new generation of alcoholics was more likely than not to have multiple drug addictions, and that the New House model of 12-Step community support and cooperation in house management was every bit as effective for these men. It became a formal policy to admit men who were seeking recovery from addiction to all substances.

Gordon was incredibly invested in the men who came through the front door of New House. Gordon made himself available to every man. What set Gordon apart from others was his ability to see the good in people. He was there to help you get back on your feet. Gordon was there to listen to you and provide motivating feedback in an empathetic tone. Gordon played a crucial role in giving the men at Newhouse their self-worth, respect, and dignity back. The legacy Gordon left behind at the New House will live on in the men he helped.
